What will you drink during the debate?

Okay, campers, whatever your persuasion, imbibing or twelve-stepper, highbrow or lowbrow or middle browbrow, we want to know: What are you going to drink during the Biden-Palin debate tomorrow?

The Comments await you below.

A prize (yet to be determined, but most likely of the foodie sort) to anyone who invents a good mixed drink (alcoholic or non), not a joke drink, for the occasion.

If you think the occasion does not in any way call for mixed drinks, say so.

You may NOT waste a Château Haut-Brion or Castello Banfi's Excelsus Sant'Antimo D.O.C. on this debate. Champagne is also off limits: we are not hexing this election. Anything else is fair game. Off you go then, as MadPriest would say.

I don't think I can bear to watch the debate because I will be by myself and it's not fun to watch it alone. That said, if I choose to, I will have some Flor de Caña rum, the one bottle out of three that didn't break in my suitcase and get my Spanish bible, Michael Ramsey's The Christian Priest Today and my Spanish/English dictionary all wet.

Jane, my choice is beyond dull. I'll have a glass of the Shiraz with the kangaroo on the bottle. Dennis will be horrified. You, too, probably. I should go with something stronger. In fact, I should probably get drunk. I'll surely need more than a wine buzz to get through it.

Decisions, Decisions!

I have a doctor's appointment in Spokane tomorrow, 4:00 p.m. Post time PST is 6:00 p.m. That gives me scant time to get back to Idaho and the only tv owned by a Democrat I know. Then it will be a beer -- Kokanee, Red Tire, or Henry Weinhard's.

These days I'm weathering the campaigns by consuming what's on sale at the cornerstore: Lagunitas Brewery's "Censored: a rich copper ale." I like it.

I know, classless... Also good for watching football which is sometimes a relief after the campaign focus.

Oh. Dear. I shall be en route from NOLA to ABQ tomorrow evening. This means I won't be watching the debate and will be limited to Southwest's offerings. It is a foregone conclusion that I will be drinking Diet Coke. You may all express horror or sympathy as appropriate.

I understand Caminante's feelings about not watching it alone. I have all day Friday to watch online without talking heads.

Best to all of you and please have designated drivers as needed. I want you all alive and well and able to vote!

I dunno...what pairs well with moose? I assume it doesn't taste like chicken...

Nah, Mimi, you're talking to a woman who drinks six dollar René Barbier from the supermarket. (Sometimes it even goes down to five dollars.) It's good, too, both the red and the white.

I'll probably be alone when I watch too. I'm a little afraid to watch. I might be cringing the whole time.

What Paul said about designated drivers! Or just stay home. And make sure you meet those voter registration deadlines.

It does sound like a beer kind of night. (Anonymous, I know who you are, haha, and I hope the doctor visit is just routine. Spokane, by the way, always makes me think of Jesuits because of the university there.)

Another thing in favor of beer is that I will have some very good Chinese takeout in the fridge, unless I have it for breakfast, which I doubt.

Paul, you could have a Diet Cuba Libre ;-), or doesn't Southwest have rum?

Beer also goes with both Biden and Palin. Yeh, maybe it's a beer evening. But I think Miz Eileen is capable of inventing a mixed drink for the occasion, something called a Jazzy Jersey or a Democrat Dynamo.

I'm housesitting right now, so it will be whatever beer the owners have on hand. I'll be watching the debate alone myself, unless debating with two dogs counts!

I have a bottle of Hess Cabernet that looks like it will be uncorked this evening.

Possibly something stronger, but we don't have anything stronger!!!

I will probably be drinking Yuengling, but if we switch to hard liquor, it will be bourbon for me, either neat or with a very little water. :-)

Here's hoping this is not too painful to watch! The interviews have been pretty awful...

I'm taking notes, Jane.

I'm drinking Jamesons, as always. I'm going to have a drink every time she says "Charlie." Oh, wait, that won't work; I'll be dry as a desert. Okay, every time she says "Ya know."

I won't be drinking anything. Instead, I plan to bash myself in the head with a heavy object every time Palin blinks, stares blankly, or says "Russia." I should be unconscious within the first two minutes.

"six dollar René Barbier" Definitely. I used to be able to get it for $3.99. If I don't go for the Flor, I have some nice Spanish tempranillos I got last night at the liquor store in NH. The wines come from places I walked on the Camino, the departments of la Rioja and Castille y Leon.

Great photo of Padre Mickey and you on his blog!

Oh, Padre Mickey is going to be drunk, drunk, drunk. PJ is going to have a worse head-ache than those of us drinking.

I'd normally be having a nice scotch, but I'm afraid I might down too many of them. Then again, I'll be home and not driving, with no early morning meetings ...

It might be cheap wine after all.

I'll be drinking Kombucha, prized for centuries for its detoxifying properties - might need several...

Jane R said...

That's a different anonymous, folks... Had to call in my Western U.S. lurker friends -- who have excellent taste and are, er, better traveled than Gov. Palin, and more knowledgeable about policy, too.

Kombucha, huh?

I favor milk thistle (the food co-op sells it in teabags), which detoxifies the liver and has barely any taste. I drank it iced in the late summer.

When to detox is the question. Perhaps we need to keep several liquid options on hand.

Kitten, dogs count as debate company. They can comment, can't they? Arrrrooooooooo.

Jane, your next post should be a request for hangover remedies.

I thought of what I would like to be drinking during the debate tonight: a 1999 Chapoutier Chateneuf du Pape, because something this divine offers hope that we may not have to load ourselves into the hand basket just yet.

Wish I could come up with something snappy, but just a glass of merlot for me. I look for blood but expect it will be bland.

I'm drinking water --so when I cough and choke and spit all over at something said it will be easy to clean it all up!

safer that way!

Excellent, Madre Margarita!

It is a beer night here, a rarity at home actually. I decided to go 1) American and 2) local. Details at 11, the debate is about to start.

Cheers, all.

P.S. René Barbier wine is on sale for $5 at the supermarket, so I bought a couple of bottles and will save them.

As it happened, I listened to most of the debate on a car radio, driving from Las Cruces to Deming, but I watched the closing statements with the in-laws, drinking a glass of red wine.

Jane R said...

Hey, I JUST finished listening to your radio play! Nice.

Two beers here, which for me is a lot. Natty Greene's Brewing Co. (Nathaniel Greene was a general of George Washington's, after whom Greensboro is named. So the microbrewery took his name.) They make four beers that sell in the stores (not sure if there are others that sell only on tap or seasonally, probably are) and I got the Buckshot Amber Ale. "Full bodied amber ale with rich, smooth flavor and notes of caramel and toffee." Not bad, and very nice with the leftover Chinese takeout, which was on the spicy side.
