I had a wonderful lunch with him and George Espey (!), among others, in Hartford a few years ago. I was keeping company with the Hartford Bureau Chief at the time. Hugh was said to give some memorable parties at his home in Connecticut, but I never made one; he was in his early eighties, so he mighta had to give them up.johniebhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11635403219973766022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4202458237483635505.post-90915228781605541462007-05-24T12:45:00.000-04:002007-05-24T12:45:00.000-04:00I love that phrase "explication de texte" for whic...I love that phrase "explication de texte" for which there really is no exact English equivalent. My instinct, based on my moderate French and basic German and Spanish, and reasonably advanced English :-), is that French is nuanced in a very unique way. Of course, the French seem to have a special relationship to their language; isn't there a Ministry for the Protection of the Language, or something of the kind? Anyway, we're sending one of our college students off to Bolivia next month for several months of cultural immersion; in light of this story, it will be very interesting to get her view from the ground.Edwardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13301501431669161476noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4202458237483635505.post-34800943505878885232007-05-23T23:19:00.000-04:002007-05-23T23:19:00.000-04:00That's not a call for guesses, but a declaration o...That's not a call for guesses, but a declaration of the obvious.

Interesting comments on the shaping of Bolivia's borders too; they are certainly consistent with my Revisionist's perspective on U S policy, in Latin America as elsewhere.johniebhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11635403219973766022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4202458237483635505.post-66758989932122522102007-05-23T15:11:00.000-04:002007-05-23T15:11:00.000-04:00Don't even worry about it. :)Don't even worry about it. :)pjhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12263601584230477201noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4202458237483635505.post-14283748882559775502007-05-23T14:22:00.000-04:002007-05-23T14:22:00.000-04:00Thanks so much, PJ. You know the one.

After the sneeze comment I decided to just be cutesy and step away, but I wrote about it on my blog because I was incredibly pissed off (by the sneeze comment, that is, not by MP, whom I think is a great guy if a bit laissez-faire with his language.)

Anyway, thanks.pjhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12263601584230477201noreply@blogger.com
