Casablanca - Marseillaise Scene

As promised in the previous post. Enjoy.

Historical notes:

Was going over family (news)letters from WWII and found one from 1943 in which my grandmother, with two sons in the U.S. Army, writing of rationing and daily life (including children, dogs, and many other things) with great humor, also notes that she and my grandfather went to see "Casablanca" and she didn't find it as great as all the p.r. had announced.

And now in these days of the European Community, the French and Germans, and the French and the British, the old "hereditary enemies," are (mostly) friends.

Still, this scene gives me the chills every time I watch it. I dare you not to stand up and sing along.

  1. I think it might behoove Americans to observe the German experience in and after WWII carefully and humbly.

  2. As I said at my blog, I love it. The dueling anthems.

  4. My favorite scene in any movie! As corny as Kansas in August, and my throat goes tight every time. I haven't got a hint of French blood, either.

  5. I'm English, but when I see this part of Casablanca I'm French for a few seconds. This is a Classic Film. One of the 100 films you must see before you die.
