Please pray for the repose of the soul of John, the brother of my friend Katherin, brother-in-law of her spouse, my friend and colleague Ibrahim, and uncle of Katherin and Ibrahim's son Issa.
John died yesterday, February 2 in Marin County, California. Please pray for his family, including his mother Carol, who survives him and who is in hospice care with Alzheimer's Disease.
Vigil will be Monday evening and funeral liturgy Tuesday morning at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in San Anselmo, California.
Give rest, O Christ, to thy servant with thy saints:
where sorrow and pain are no more;
neither sighing but life everlasting.
Thou only art immortal,
the creator and maker of all:
and we are mortal formed from the dust of the earth,
and unto earth shall we return:
for so thou didst ordain,
when thou created me saying:
"Dust thou art und unto dust shalt thou return."
All we go down to the dust;
and weeping o'er the grave we make our song:
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
May the dead rest in peace and may the living be consoled, all in His name.
ReplyDeleteFran said it better than I could.
ReplyDeleteYes, pj is right about Fran.
ReplyDeleteLet light perpetual shine upon him.
With the spirits of the righteous made perfect Give rest to the soul of Your servant, O Savior; And keep it safe in that life of blessedness That is lived with You, O Friend of Man.
ReplyDeleteIn the place of Your rest, O Lord, Where all Your Saints repose, Give rest also to the soul of Your servant, For You alone are immortal.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
You are our God Who went down to Hades To loose the pains of the dead that were there; Give rest also to the soul of Your servant, O Savior.
Both now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.
O Virgin, alone pure and immaculate that in maiden-motherhood brought forth God, intercede for the salvation of the soul of your servant.

Love to you and to your friend and her family.
Prayers ascending Jane - what Fran and Paul said, so beautifully.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks, Paul and Fran and all, friends. See my note in the comments in the post above, too.
ReplyDeletePaul, did you know Ibrahim on the faculty at GTU/Starr King? (He was Elias before he was Ibrahim.) It's his brother-in-law who died. Other brothers-in-law are Orthodox (OCA) clergy.
No, I did not know Ibrahim.
ReplyDeleteHugs.
May angels lead you into Paradise; may the martyrs receive you at your coming and lead you to the holy city of Jerusalem. May the choir of angels receive you, and with Lazarus, who once was poor, may you have eternal rest.
ReplyDeleteDear Jane R,
ReplyDeleteYour web and blog have given me peace. I was just informed of my dear friend John's falling asleep.
It had been four years since we last met and I had no knowledge of his illness. John informed me of his dear mother's alzheimers (so shocking for such a brillient woman).
To read the prayers in the blog and to actually know John died surrounded by family and was buried with services at his brother George's parish (St. Nicholas) is a comfort.
I knew not of his illness, move from Tarzana death nor funeral.
John was a baritone with the Los Angeles Opera Company and oh what a voice! John was reverent to God and a bit irreverent with people! One of a kind. It was a joy to be his friend. Carol is everthing a Christian widow should be! Like his father, John was taken from us by cancer all too soon.
"...give rest to the soul of thy servent in a place of refreshment where all thy saints repose. Where there is neither pain nor sorrow but LIFE EVERLASTING!"
My friend, may your memory be eternal. May you shine like the stars in heaven and may your voice be heard with the choir of angels.
To your family be assured of my prayers.
In the end love abides.
