Friday cat blogging: Roman encounter, 2003

Nearly five years ago, in early June, I was in Rome for a family wedding and went to an antiquities museum with two of my cousins, and in the courtyard on the way out, we encountered one of Rome's many, many street cats. Here I am feeding it some water from my hand. (One cousin is taking the picture and the other is telling me not to get too near the cat because I'll catch some horrid disease.) You can't see either me or the cat too well, but it's still a nice picture, and I like the cobblestones. Sure beats the mall-sprawl scene here, which has been driving me a little batty.

  3. Great pic! I think I will enjoy the kitties when we finally get to Rome. My family was tickled enough to get a call from the "old country" last summer, and that was just Turin, pretty far from the south where my family's from.

I take it from your posts everything is ok on your end? I just heard about the tornado this evening as I was running around doing errands. Hope you and all your church and academic families are ok...

  4. Thank you, we are fine! Had to take shelter last night at 2 a.m. during the paper-grading marathon, which meant sitting in the hall, which is the only place in the house "away from windows." The tornado did touch down near the outlying farmers' market, not the downtown one I generally go to, and destroyed some booths; I heard about that in an e-mail from one of the farmers whose list I am on. Haven't even had time to read the papers and various updates.

  5. Thanks for the compliments, Fran and pj. The hair is from my Momma and Mother Nature. Well, haircut by a good hairdresser, but the color is natural.

  6. Your cousin was right. Don't play with starnge cats!

  7. Thanks to the other cousin for taking the picture.

And, D-P, how do you distinguish a "strange cat" from any other kind? I remember a "Stray Cat Blues" from the Stones, I believe, many years ago; is that what you meant?

  8. Thanks, DP. No harm done. This one certainly wasn't feral, it was so friendly. (The cats living in the Foro Romano may be another matter, but one can't get near them.) If I were pregnant I'd be more careful (toxoplasmosis - though you get it from cat feces, so it's kitty litter you're not supposed to handle) but I am not and was not five years ago either ;-), and no dread diseases ensued from that friendly encounter.
