I always loved this piece of the verse in the hymnal version, but it's not always in the performances...

America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self control,
Thy liberty in law.

Still, Mr. Ray Charles rocks this song.

    It's difficult for me to listen to other versions, even this one at times, but Mr. RayCharles makes anything alright!

    I know that, Mimi, but any invocation of that America brings the contrast to the one I've always lived in, and with it, the pain.
