No more Opus :-(
Salon has an interview with Berkeley Breathed, creator of Opus the Penguin and his band of friends, on why he's ending his strip. It has something to do with the quality (if you can call it that) of our national discourse.
He said that the vile mood of the country was starting to spill into the character of Opus, and he would not let that happen. He will transport Opus into another dimension of reality (not "die" as such), and will return to writing children's books.
Perhaps his hope will be renewed soon. But whatever; I can understand someone not wanting to do the same thing for years and years. I mean, I still read Doonesbury, I'm glad Trudeau hasn't quit, but it ain't quite what it once was.
Very interesting interview. Underneath it, I smell burnout. It might have a different seasoning this year, but the best strip in the world will still get "written out" eventually. He has kept "Opus" going for a good, long run as he did "Bloom County" and he knows when it is time to move on.
Thanks for filling in the word verification so that we know you're not a robot.

Well, this isn't the first time this guy has quit.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but see the interview, it sounds different this time.
ReplyDeleteThen again, never say never and all that.
I can't say that I blame him. If he's losing his inner Charlie Brown, that is serious. Seriously serious. ;o(
