Merton (born on this day in 1915) on the work of peace compared to the work of war

"If this task of building a peaceful world is the most important task of our time, it is also the most difficult. It will, in fact, require far more discipline, more sacrifice, more planning, more thought, more cooperation and more heroism than war ever demanded."

-Thomas Merton, who was born on this day in 1915
(died Dec. 10, 1968)

I guess it is very hard for us to really love, really live in community, locally or globally. What Henri Nouwen said rings true, that living in community is living with people that drive you crazy. I like that. Even in my classroom I see bitterness and envy flesh itself out, only to be softened by a personal kind of love and compassion.
